Cluster Developments Onsite Wastewater Treatment

Project Details

Location: Borrowdale, Harare, Zimbabwe

Application: Cluster Development Residential Onsite Wastewater Treatment

Occupancy Capacity: 30 people

Technology: BIOROCK Wastewater Treatment System (ER5010)

System Type: Decentralized onsite wastewater treatment

Treatment Configuration: Passive fixed-bed biological treatment with non-electric aeration

Project Overview

The Kerfield Cluster Wastewater Treatment Project demonstrates the deployment of decentralized onsite wastewater treatment infrastructure for low-density residential cluster developments in Zimbabwe. The project utilizes BIOROCK’s non-electric biological treatment technology to provide environmentally compliant wastewater treatment, reduce potable water demand through treated water reuse and eliminate the operational inefficiencies commonly associated with conventional septic tank systems.

The installation was designed to serve a 15-unit residential cluster development while ensuring sustainable wastewater management, irrigation-grade effluent reuse and compliance with national environmental discharge standards. (EMA SI 6/2007)

Value Delivered

WATER SECURITY

The system substantially reduces potable water demand through onsite wastewater recycling, supporting water conservation in urban residential developments. The plant produces an average of 2000L of treated water per day.

COST SAVING

The biological treatment process minimizes sludge accumulation, significantly reducing desludging frequency and long-term maintenance costs.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE

The installation provides environmentally compliant wastewater treatment aligned with EMA SI 6/2007 discharge requirements.

INFRASTRUCTURE RESILIANCE

Unlike conventional septic systems, the BIOROCK system eliminates common risks associated with septic overflow, soak away failure and groundwater contamination.
